The Importance of Continuing Education in the Beauty Industry

Why Continuing Education Is One of the Best Investments You Can Make

One of my favorite things about the beauty industry is that there is always something new to learn. Whether it be a new product, technique, trend, or service. The beauty industry is constantly evolving and coming out with exciting things. Since things within the beauty industry change so often, I believe continuing education is one of the very best investments you can make, not only for yourself but for your career.

After becoming a licensed cosmetologist, I quickly realized that cosmetology school gives you a good foundation, but it does not teach you everything you need to know. The real learning begins behind the chair. 

Why Continuing Education Matters

Taking classes and staying up to date on the latest trends not only benefits you but also benefits your clients. Here is a short list of reasons I believe constant education is important:

It Helps to Improve Your Skills

The more education under your belt, the more confident you will become. Learning new techniques can help you to perform services more efficiently, give better results, and solve challenges you may or may not have experienced before. 

It Keeps You Current

Trends in the beauty world change very quickly. New products, colors, nail art, hair techniques, and skincare treatments are always being introduced to us. Continuing your education helps you stay informed so you can offer new services your clients will be excited about.

It Builds Client Confidence

Your clients will appreciate knowing their stylist, nail tech, or esthetician is committed to learning. Whenever they see you invest in your education, it will reassure them that you are using current techniques and are able to provide them with high-quality services.

It Can Grow Your Business

New opportunities can arise by learning a new service or improving an existing one. Whether you add a specialty treatment, improve your consultation skills, or learn better business practices. Continuing your education can help your business to grow over time. 

Ways to Continue Learning

Expanding your education does not always require attending expensive classes. There are many ways to continue learning throughout your career that are very affordable or even free. Here is a list of ways to continue your beauty education:

  • Attend hands-on classes.
  • Watch educational videos from trusted beauty professionals.
  • Read beauty blogs and industry articles.
  • Listen to business and beauty podcasts.
  • Follow reputable educators on social media.
  • Attend beauty shows and conventions.
  • Learn from other professionals in your area.
Setting aside a time each month to learn something new or to improve an existing service can make a big difference.

My Favorite Ways to Learn

I enjoy learning through taking online classes, watching videos, and learning from fellow stylists in my area. I also follow experienced educators who share tips, techniques, and business advice. 

One of the best things for me when I was a "baby stylist" was to watch others with more experience than I. Now, not to say you have to follow what they do exactly, but watching them can help you to find your groove and your way for different services.

There is so much knowledge available in today's world, and taking advantage of these resources has helped me continue to grow in my career. No matter how long you have been licensed, there is always room for improvement.

Final Thoughts

One of the most important things I have learned is that you never truly stop being a student in the beauty industry. The willingness to keep learning is what helps us, as cosmetologists, to better serve our clients and to continue growing as professionals. 

Whether you are newly licensed or have years of experience, I encourage you to prioritize continuing your education. Every class you take, video you watch, book you read, and every new skill you practice is an investment in yourself and your future.

Those years played a huge role in shaping the beauty professional I am today.
